The Lion and His Story

Hotel Löwen in Meersburg - Historic

The exact construction of the “Löwen” is unknown, but it is undoubtedly one of the oldest inns in Meersburg.
In the 15th century it was the seat of the mayor Simon Weinzürns, who went down in Meersburg's annals of history as a rebel from Lake Constance because he fought for the citizens' right to have a say in the city's constitution, but lost the fight and was drowned in Lake Constance in 1461. The Löwen was first mentioned as an inn in 1534 and has been called a drinking tavern for around 400 years.

One of the most famous guests of the Red House was His Habsburg Majesty Joseph II in 1777.

At that time, Johann Baptist Linck, son of the then innkeeper of the Löwen, was growing up in the prosperous Löwen Inn - but he did not become his father's successor, because his godfather sent him to the military at the age of 15, where he was soon appointed lieutenant colonel and in 1827 was ennobled by the Hessian Elector Wilhelm I for saving the city of Hersfeld in the Fourth Coalition War and from then on was called Lingg von Lingenfeld.

A memorial plaque next to the imposing golden lion above the entrance door still bears witness to the famous innkeeper’s son.

After further generations of innkeepers, Sigfrid Fischer finally saw the historic gem offered for sale in 1986 and did not hesitate for long; he was immediately taken with the Löwen.

After 30 years of successful management, in 2016 he handed the house over to younger hands, his daughter Carmen Fischer, who runs the hotel.
