Welcome

to Hotel Weinstube Löwen

A jewel right in the centre of Meersburg

Surrounded by steep vineyards the medieval town of Meersburg sits above Lake Constance - with narrow lanes, patrician houses and an impressive old castle. Only a few steps away from the medieval castle, past the castle mill, you will find our Löwen (Lion) Hotel situated on the historic market square. The listed building, with its ochre red front and green window shutters, charms passers-by not only because of the lovely lilac wisteria growing along the facade and the attractive terrace.

We welcome you to stay with us – our hotel rooms, twenty in all, have been furnished with great care and our popular restaurant will serve you regional and international cuisine.

It is only about 300 m to the lakeside from our hotel – perfect for exploring the lake by boat or crossing the lake on the car ferry to Constance. Numerous cycling and hiking paths are close by as well as the thermal baths and outdoor pool – all within walking distance.

Our hotel and restaurant are open all year round – each season on Lake Constance has its own charm: spring with the wonderful fruit blossom, summer with an almost mediterranean climate and lots of possibilities for excursions either on the water or ashore. Autumn attracts visitors because of colourful views and the wine harvest in and around Meersburg. And in winter, when Lake Constance lies there peacefully, romantic Christmas markets invite you to browse and enjoy mulled wine and cider.

The Löwen and its history

It is not known when exactly the “Löwen“ was built, but it is certainly one of the oldest inns in Meersburg. In the 15th century the Löwen was home of Simon Weinzürn, mayor of Meersburg. He made history as the rebel of Lake Constance, because he stood up for the citizen´s voice in the town constitution. However, he lost the conflict and was punished by being drowned in the lake in 1461. The Löwen as an inn was first mentioned in 1534 and for about 400 years it has been called an inn.

One of the most famous guests of the "red house" was His Habsburg Majesty Joseph II in 1777. During that time Johann Baptist Linck, son of the former innkeeper, grew up in the thriving Löwen inn – he did not become his father's successor, as at the age of 15, his godfather sent him to the army where he was soon made lieutenant colonel. In 1827 he was ennobled by William I, Elector of Hesse, because he saved the town of Hersfeld – from now on he was called Lingg von Linggenfeld. A plaque, next to the golden lion above the entrance to the Löwen, reminds visitors of the famous innkeeper's son.

After a series of further innkeepers Sigrid Fischer saw the historic treasure for sale in 1986 – he was immediately taken in by charm of the Löwen and did not hesitate to purchase the inn. After 30 years of successfully running the Löwen hotel he handed it over to the next generation, his daughter Carmen Fischer, who is chef of the restaurant and his granddaughter Dana Fischer-Jäger who manages the hotel.
